Aura — the Dynamic Island for Mac
Aura is a macOS app that turns the MacBook notch into a live panel. Point at the notch and the player, a file tray, system switches and shortcuts open up. While the panel is closed, the notch itself shows track changes, volume, brightness, charging, headphones connecting, timers and your next calendar event. On a Mac without a notch Aura draws a compact header in the middle of the top edge.
New in version 1.2
Unlock your Mac with your face
A Face ID button in the panel: enter your Mac password, roll your head in a circle — done. Lock the screen and the camera recognises you in a fraction of a second; a lock slides out from under the notch, turns into a checkmark and your Mac opens. Camera frames are never saved: only encrypted face landmarks stay on disk, and the password lives in the Keychain.
Disk cleanup
A disk icon in the panel header: a ring of disk usage, how much space caches, logs and Xcode, npm and pip junk take, and a chart of past cleanups. It cleans on a tap or, if you turn it on, by itself once a day, and shows what it freed. Documents, Downloads and the Trash are never touched.
Panel widgets
Media player
Artwork, scrubbing, shuffle, repeat and system volume.
Tray
A file shelf that spans windows and desktops.
Controls
Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, microphone, appearance, sound, brightness.
Apps
Switching between the programs you have running.
Clipboard and screenshots
Your copy history and the most recent screenshots.
Calendar and timer
The next event and a countdown.
Player control
Spotify and Music are controlled directly: play, pause, tracks, scrubbing, shuffle, repeat, like and volume. Apple TV and VLC get basic transport, and every other player, including browsers, Podcasts and IINA, works through the system media keys. A swipe left or right across the notch changes track.
Keyboard layout fix
Typed a phrase in the wrong keyboard layout? Aura notices and shows the corrected text under the notch, ready to copy or replace in one click. The macOS dictionaries for Russian and English decide, so abbreviations are left alone.
macOS tweaks
Appearance
Dark and light mode, accent and highlight colour. An Aura theme changes them along with the panel.
Dock and menu bar
Auto-hide with delay and speed, icon size and magnification, position, minimise effect. Clock: 24-hour time, seconds, date, weekday, battery percentage.
Finder and screenshots
Extensions, hidden files, path and status bars, folders first, default view. Screenshot format, shadow, floating thumbnail.
Wallpaper
The gradient is built inside Aura: colours, angle, glow, vignette and grain. Or bring your own file.
Live wallpaper
Video plays in a window at desktop level: above the picture, below the icons. Clicks pass through.
System animations
Window resize speed, spring-loaded folders, reduced motion and transparency.

FAQ
- Does it work on a Mac without a notch?
- Yes. On those machines Aura draws a compact header of its own in the middle of the top edge and behaves exactly the same.
- How much does Aura cost?
- Nothing. Aura is completely free: no subscription, no trial, no keys and no paid features. Install it on as many of your Macs as you like.
- What about external displays?
- The panel lives on whichever screen the pointer is on. Behaviour on an external display is configured separately.
- Where does my data go?
- Nowhere. Track metadata, files and calendar events are handled on the device. The only thing that goes online is the update check.
- Is face unlock the same as Face ID?
- No. A Mac camera has no depth sensor like an iPhone, so recognition works on a regular image and could in theory be fooled by a photo. For extra protection there is a blink check in settings. Your Mac password stays in the Keychain, face landmarks are stored encrypted on this Mac only, and camera frames are never saved at all.
- What does disk cleanup delete?
- Only what apps rebuild on their own: caches in ~/Library/Caches older than three days, logs older than a week, Xcode DerivedData and npm, yarn, pip and Homebrew caches. Documents, Desktop, Downloads and the Trash are never touched and no admin password is needed. The daily auto-clean is off by default and turns on with one toggle.
- What do I need to run it?
- macOS 14 or newer, Apple Silicon or Intel. The build is signed with an Apple developer certificate. On first launch macOS may ask for permission: open System Settings → Privacy & Security and click “Open Anyway” next to Aura. You only do this once.
